Family Of Man Tasered To Death Files Lawsuit, Demands $36m

Micheal Chukwuebuka, Reporting

THE family of a man who died after police reportedly used a stun gun on him has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Mobile.

The deceased family, in the suit on Monday Dec. 11, 2023, alleged that mobile police used excessive force that led to his death.

Stonix News recalled that Jawan Dallas, 36, died in July after he was shocked with a stun gun while police were trying to subdue him.

While announcing the lawsuit during a news conference on Monday, attorney Harry Daniels said:

“He was assaulted multiple times, struck multiple times and tasered multiple times.”

Last month, the district attorney announced that a grand jury cleared the officers of criminal wrongdoing and said Dallas died of underlying medical conditions that were exacerbated by drug use and the struggle with officers.

According to the family’s attorneys, the body camera footage, which was viewed by the family last month, shows that officers used excessive force.

The family attorneys also urged the police department to publicly release the video.

On July 2, 2023, officers approached Dallas in response to a possible burglary report at a trailer park when a caller reported that a stranger who appeared to be homeless, was in his yard.

Police approached Dallas, who was in his vehicle at another trailer, and another man who was in the yard at the home.

As contained in the lawsuit, an officer demanded Dallas get out of the car and produce his identification.

Dallas refused and told the officers that they were violating his rights; he attempted to flee on foot at some point but was tackled by an officer.

The lawsuit seeks $36 million in damages and names the city and two officers, names withheld, as defendants.
