FG Secures Release Of 100 Pupils Abducted In Niger State


THE Federal Government has secured the release of 100 students who were abducted from St Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

A gang of armed attackers had raided the school on 21 November, taking away pupils, secondary school students and members of staff.

Initial reports estimated 227 victims; however, subsequent confirmations by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state placed the total abducted figure at 303.

According to CAN’s Chairman in Niger State, Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, 50 pupils had earlier managed to escape and reunite with their families.

He also clarified that 141 pupils were not abducted during the attack.

This meant that 253 children, including 236 pupils, three children belonging to staff and 14 secondary school students, as well as 12 staff members remained in captivity.

Sunday’s development, which saw 100 of the hostages released, brings the number still held by the abductors to 153 pupils and 12 staff.

The Federal Government has assured families that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of all remaining victims.
