How Gunmen Ambushed Convoy, Killed Four Soldiers In Rivers

GUNMEN have ambushed a Yenagoa-bound convoy of Daewoo Construction workers along the Ahoada/Abua section of the East-West road in Rivers State, killing four Soldiers and two drivers attached to the company.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning.

Witnesses said the gunmen also kidnapped two expatriates believed to be Koreans who were part of the convoy.

It was further gathered that the incident, which occurred at about 9.30 a.m, caused pandemonium along the East-West road.

A security source, who confirmed the development, said: “The suspected kidnappers ambushed a team of expatriates being escorted by troops along the Ahoada/Obua section of the East/West road.”

“During the attack, the assailants opened fire on the convoy killing four soldiers and two civilian drivers and subsequently abducted two Koreans in the process.”

In a statement issued by Major Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the Acting Deputy Director of the 6 Division Army Public Relations Officer, the soldiers were conducting a routine patrol when they fell victim to the ambush orchestrated by the unidentified gunmen.

Major Danjuma also confirmed that two employees of the oil company whom the soldiers were attached to remain unaccounted for.

“Suspects allegedly escaped through the Emesu waterside, using the Orashi River.

“Troops are currently combing the general area to fish out the perpetrators of this dastardly act.

“Additionally, efforts are ongoing to ensure that the unaccounted oil workers are found,” the statement read.

On his part, the General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army/Land Component South, Operation Delta Safe, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, has condemned the attack.

“Major General Jamal Abdussalam, while acknowledging the supreme sacrifice paid by the gallant soldiers, strongly condemned the unwarranted attack.

“He reassured that efforts are ongoing to track down these criminals to pay for their crimes,” Major Danjuma noted.

He assured the general public that troops will not relent until all forms of criminality are eliminated within the Niger Delta region.
