How Rivers Crisis Claimed Two Lives

THE Tuesday political standoff in Rivers State has claimed the lives of a policeman and a member of the state vigilance group.

The renewed crisis followed the expiration of the tenure of local government chairmen on Monday June 17, 2024, and the Tuesday state broadcast by Governor Siminalayi Fubara that the head of the councils should assume leadership.

The local government chairmen, believed to be loyal to the minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, insisted that they won’t resign on the argument that the Martin Amaewhule-led State Assembly had extended their tenure by six months.

The youths of the state besieged the various council headquarters, insisting that the chairmen must handover and leave as directed by Fubara.

The ensuing Tuesday battle of supremacy led to the killing of the two lives in Omuma Local Government Area, following the invasion of the council headquarters at Eberi-Omuma.

The image maker of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that two deaths were recorded.

She said a policeman and a vigilance group operative lost their lives in the crisis, adding that investigations had commenced.
