The leadership highlighted their commitment to professionalism, openness, welfare, engagement, and resourcefulness, staying true to their campaign promises.
Professionalism
Under professionalism, the NUJ Delta State Council established an Editorial Board and an Ethics and Disciplinary Committee to uphold high standards within the journalism profession.
They also partnered with organizations such as the Nigerian Army, FRSC, and LGBT community for workshops and training sessions for journalists.
Notably, two new chapels, Oasis and Fresh Angle, were created, and elections were successfully conducted across six chapels, ensuring smooth operations across the council.
Openness
In terms of openness, Oyowe and Sorokwu emphasised the timely remittance of professional fees and dues to the National Secretariat and zonal bodies, ensuring transparency and accountability in financial matters.
Welfare
The council also prioritised welfare initiatives, which included a salary increment for staff and the timely payment of wages.
They raised funds to support members in need, including accident victims Toyin Akingbowa and Ann Eluwa, and members requiring medical assistance like Austin Akanigha and Dave Okpogadie.
Furthermore, the council took responsibility for providing befitting burial programmes for departed members, while offering financial and emotional support to those dealing with personal and family-related challenges.
Engagement
The leadership made significant efforts to engage with key government officials and institutions, including courtesy visits to the governor, local council chairmen, commissioners, and various public institutions.
These engagements, according to the NUJ leadership, have helped strengthen relationships between the union and various stakeholders.
They also hosted top officers from the EFCC Delta/Edo/Ondo zone, setting a broad agenda to address governance and social issues.
Resourcefulness
The NUJ Delta State Council has been resourceful in generating revenue and improving the Press Centre. By outsourcing the management of Press Centre businesses, they secured funds to refurbish the chairman’s car and repair the union bus.
The council also oversaw the construction of eight lock-up shops and an Executive Green Lounge at the Press Centre, further enhancing the union’s infrastructure.
Additionally, they cleared outstanding debts inherited from the previous administration, totaling over ₦1.4 million.
Chairman Oyowe and Secretary Sorokwu concluded by expressing their determination to do more in the coming year, as they continue to build on these verifiable achievements.
