The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP), has rescued a 12-year-old girl forcefully married off to a 50-year-old man in Benue State.
The NAPTIP Zonal Commander, Mrs Gloria Bai, revealed that the underaged girl (name unknown) was deceptively married off to a 50-year-old farmer by her parents.
Mrs Bai said that investigations revealed that the underage girl was constantly abused in the period of months she had stayed in the said marriage.
The girl was rescued after a concerned citizen reported the matter to the agency.
According to Mrs Bai, the girl is currently under the custody of NAPTIP, while they are making frantic efforts to get the man arrested.
She promised that the said man would be charged to court, as investigations on how the girl came to be in the man’s house is ongoing.
She further said the underage girl would be taken to the hospital for medical examination and undergo counseling.
