Nigeria Police Warn Against Misuse Of IGP’s Name

THE Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning to the public about the misuse of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) by some individuals and officers for fraudulent purposes.

In a statement released on 28 December 2024, the NPF expressed concern over persistent unprofessional conduct that undermines public trust in the Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned about the unprofessional actions of a few officers that tarnish the reputation of the entire institution,” said ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer.

He noted that despite disciplinary actions against erring officers, some continue to engage in acts that violate professional standards.

Even more troubling, the statement highlighted the fraudulent use of the IGP’s name to intimidate victims and carry out illegal activities.

“These individuals use the name of the IGP to give an impression of approval for their actions, discouraging victims from reporting such misconduct,” the statement read.

The Force urged the public to report any suspicious activities or misconduct by police officers to their superiors or the appropriate Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their states.

“Contact details of CRU officers in all states have been previously published and remain available for public use,” Adejobi added.

To ensure accountability, the NPF has provided direct contact numbers for senior officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities through the following:

DCP Akin Fakorede, Head, IGP Monitoring Unit: 08184077076

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer: 08037168147

CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head, IGP Special Investigation Unit: 08069318238

SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC to the IGP: 08094712605

The statement reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to integrity and professionalism. “The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to upholding the highest ethical standards and will not tolerate any actions that compromise public trust,” Adejobi emphasised.

The public was encouraged to collaborate with the police by reporting any suspicious behaviour. “Justice and fairness remain our guiding principles, and with public cooperation, we can ensure a safer society,” the statement concluded.
