THE Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have served for more than 35 years or are above 60 years of age.
This is contained in a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani,
Head, Press and Public Relations, PSC.

Retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu
He said the decision followed the Commission’s first extraordinary meeting of the year, where it revisited a previous ruling made at its 24th plenary meeting in September 2017 regarding the date of appointment for Force entrants.
According to the statement, after a thorough review, the PSC concluded that its prior decision contradicted the principles of service merger in the public sector and violated Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii), which mandates retirement at 35 years of service or upon reaching 60 years of age.
Accordingly, during its extraordinary meeting held on Friday, 31st January 2025, the Commission approved the immediate retirement of affected officers in line with the public service regulations.

The meeting, statement hinted, was chaired by the Commission’s Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, alongside retired Supreme Court Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, Honourable Commissioner DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
The decision has been officially communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation, the statement concluded.
It will be recalled that Omoyele Sowere, presidential candidate and activist, has accused IGP Kayode Egbetokun of overstaying in office despite his age, a case that has attracted litigation by the police hierarchy.
