Subsidy Removal: Filling Stations Close Shop In Uyo

Rita Enemuru, Reporting

A number of fuel stations have shut down in Akwa Ibom State as a result of the fuel subsidy removal announced by the new President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday.

President Tinubu, in his inauguration speech during his swearing-in ceremony, announced that premium motor spirit (PMS) will no longer be subsidized by the Federal Government.

This announcement, however, has led to some fuel stations shutting down in Eket and some hiking the price of fuel in Uyo Local Government Area of the State.

Checks by Stonix News earlier, Tuesday, revealed that while some fuel stations out of the few at Ikot Ekpene Road have shut down, the rest have increased the price of pump price from N230 to N500 per litre.

Speaking with transporters about their feeling concerning the removal, some lamented that transportation will definitely increase as a result of the increase in petrol.

One Uduak Okon said: “Were they even subsidizing fuel prices? I’m not sure because how can you say you are paying part of fuel money but fuel is increasing everyday.

“Now that it is official that the Federal Government no longer subsidizes fuel, it is a must that transportation will increase in the following days.

“We know that subsidy has been removed but what does that have to do with fuel stations shutting down? Truth be said, Nigerians are their own enemies.

“How can you suddenly increase fuel from N230 to N500 barely 24 hours after it was announced?

“It is when we stop the blame on the government and start working on ourselves that this country will be better.”
