Suspect Kills Officer, Injures Another In Shooting

Micheal Chukwuebuka, Reporting

EASTERN Tennessee authorities are searching for a suspect they say was involved in a shooting that killed one sheriff’s deputy and left another wounded.

In a post on Facebook, Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong said warrants have been issued for 42-year-old Kenneth Dehart, who is wanted on suspicion of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm after the Thursday evening shooting.

According to Berrong, Deputy Greg McCowan was killed in the shooting during a traffic stop.

A female officer was shot in the leg and returned fire.

As of when filing this report, she was being treated at a private hospital.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. We had an officer killed tonight.

“I’m so sorry that we’ve lost a young man. I talked to his family earlier. I apologised for not protecting him,” Berrong said during a news conference.

Berrong further revealed that a $10,000 reward has been offered, promising to get the suspect off the streets of east Tennessee and put him behind bars.

According to the sheriff’s office, multiple law enforcement officials are involved in the hunt for Dehart, who is considered armed and dangerous.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, via a post on social media, said Dehart was last seen in the city of Maryville.

Stonix News reports that Maryville is in Blount County and located about 17 miles south of Knoxville.
