THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reacted to the #ENDEFCC protests that rocked Ughelli and Ibadan in Delta and Oyo states during the week.
Stonix News had reported that youths, suspected to be internet fraudsters, had staged protests calling for the scrapping of the anti-graft agency, alleging harrassment and incessant arrest.
At Ughelli on Tuesday, the hitherto peaceful protest snowballed into an orgy of violence with three persons feared dead and over 12 fuel trucks destroyed.
In Ibadan on Thursday, a similar protest was staged at the gate of Government Secretariat, as the suspected frauds were chanting solidarity songs and calling for an end to EFCC’s arrests and alleged harrassment.
These came after hundreds of internet fraudsters were arrested in Warri axis and Ibadan with some convicted and their tools and properties confiscated.
Reacting to the protests and call for its scrapping, the anti-graft agency posted on its Facebook page on Thursday, reaffirming its constitutional mandate to rid Nigeria of all shades of financial crimes.
“The mandate of the EFCC is to rid Nigeria of all forms of economic and financial crimes.
“The Abdulrasheed Bawa-led management of the commission has vowed to execute this mandate to the letter,” the agency posted.
