ABOUT two years ago, I saw an opportunity on a friend’s WhatsApp status—it was a vacancy for a contract-based Research Assistant. I copied the email address attached to the advertisement and applied for the position.
The advertiser was a US-based researcher conducting a study in Nigeria. I was contacted for an interview, but during the course of the discussion, the interviewer informed me that I would have to relocate to another state for about two months. At the time, I was teaching Phonics in various schools, and the school term had not yet ended.

I was not hired for that position because I couldn’t relocate. However, the researcher asked if I could do transcription, and I told her I would do my best.
I didn’t know much about transcription at the time, so I carried out some research online. I read about transcription processes and reviewed sample transcripts.
A few weeks later, the interviewer contacted me again. I signed some documents, and the audio files to be transcribed were sent to me.
I searched the internet once more, read further, and looked through more templates and examples. Then, I got down to work.
Within a week, I completed the first batch, and more audio files were sent to me. Eventually, I completed the entire assignment in two months.
Beyond the fact that I earned in two months what I would typically earn in about two years, I also gained valuable experience. I ventured into something new—and I was proud of myself.
