Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

NO fewer than 12 persons have lost their lives, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road traffic crash along the Ejule–Enugu highway in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has confirmed.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi State, Mr Tenimu Etuku, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Lokoja.

He explained that the accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday when an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus lost control due to excessive speed.

Describing the incident as “fatal and very unfortunate,” Etuku said the bus, belonging to Romchi Mass Transit, was travelling from Abuja to the eastern part of the country when the driver reportedly lost control and rammed into a faulty articulated vehicle that was parked along the road.

According to him, the injured victims were rushed to Mercy of Jesus Hospital in Ejule for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in a morgue.

The sector commander used the opportunity to advise motorists, particularly during the Yuletide, to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations in order to prevent avoidable crashes and the loss of precious lives.

He noted that compliance with road safety regulations would significantly support the efforts of the FRSC and the Federal Government in reducing the alarming rate of road traffic accidents and fatalities in the country.

He further urged drivers to remain patient and maintain safe driving practices, especially on long-distance journeys during the festive season.
