LAST week, I had a discussion with some of my students at the University of Ibadan. They are 200-level students in the Faculty of Technology, and I teach them GES 201.
During the class discussion, about two of them told me they used to write, but they no longer do.
Somehow, the passion died at some point.
While I encouraged them to intentionally resuscitate their love for writing, I shared my experience with them too.

When I was in secondary school, I used to write stories as well.
At one point, I wrote an entire ‘novel’. It was a full book.
I even went so far as to give the book to my English teacher to read. The teacher commended my effort and gave a positive review. After that, I kept the book in the shelf.
Some years later, I met a man from a publishing company and told him of my passion for writing. He encouraged me to bring one of my manuscripts.
I got it typed, travelled from Oyo to Ibadan, and submitted the manuscript.
Eventually, after a few weeks, the manuscript was rejected.
Since then, I have not made another attempt to write or publish a book.
Dear young person, fuel your gifts. Preserve your talents. Even if there is no one to encourage you, please encourage yourself.
That talent can take you to places. Your gifts can take you far in life.
