THE Delta State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a youth over N100 bribe by a trigger-happy cop on Wednesday morning.
The police gave the name of the deceased as Mr. Onyeka Ibe, who was shot dead on Wednesday at about 9:30a.m by one Inspector of Police, Inspr. Ebri Ubi, during a Stop-and-Search duty along Ugbolu-Illah Road, Oshimili North.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed Ali, “expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of late Mr. Onyeka Ibe, who was reportedly shot dead on the 5/4/2023 at about 0930 hours by an Inspector of Police, one Inspr. Ebri Ubi, while on Stop-and-Search duty along Ugbolu-Illah Road, Oshimili North LGA, Delta State.”
According to the statement, CP Ali, “on receipt of the sad news, immediately ordered the arrest and detention of the errant police officer and directed his transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Asaba where he has further ordered for a thorough and speedy investigation.”
The CP, according to Edafe, “noted that for the Force, being a disciplined organization, will not condone such cruel action by any member, assuring that the offending Officer will be subjected to internal disciplinary measures, including criminal prosecution.”
“He therefore appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that justice will not just be done, but will be seen to have been done.”
Stonix News had earlier reported that following the killing of the victim by the trigger-happy cop, youths in the state on Wednesday stormed the headquarters of the Police Command in Asaba with the corpse of the victim, demanding justice.
The deceased was cut down in his prim by the cop for allegedly refusing to part with N100 bribe on the road.
The youths had carried the corpse of the young man while marching in protest to the premises of the police headquarters in Asaba, the state capital.
They barricaded a major road in Asaba to protest the alleged killing of the young man for allegedly refusing to pay N100 bribe to policemen along the Ugbolu-Asaba road.
