The Federal Government, on Monday, has asked Britain to rescind the ban imposed on Nigerian travelers over Omicron variant of COVID-19.
FG says the measure is “unjust, unfair, divisive, indefensible and discriminatory.”
Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, at a press conference in Abuja, decried the ban, wondering why such a hasty decision was taken against over 200 million people.
He wondered why residents, who travel to Britain will be allowed into the country to quarantine and test, while Nigerians are not allowed the same treatment in Britain.
He said it was wrong to impose such punishment on Nigerians because of just a few cases of Omicron that did not originate in the country in the first instance.
Mohammed, however, did not say if the FG will retaliate through the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on Covid-19.
He described the ban on Nigerians as a hasty reaction which is capable of affecting the efforts to control the virus so far.
According to him, rather than ban countries, the developed world should look critically into the issue of vaccine equity.
He philosophically warned that “unless everyone is safe, no one is safe.”
