THE students and other inhabitants of the University College Hospital (UCH) and the Alexander Brown Hall of residence have not had electricity supply for studies, and other clinical needs for almost three months, The Conscience Post could confirm.
The students lamented the deplorable state of power at their hostel, and at the UCH in the institution, as one of the students said his second medical examinations were forthcoming.
The students were seen at the main campus of the university due to the power outage at the UCH, ABH, as they prepare for the forthcoming medical examinations.
For the medical students, their expectations were that they would be at the UCH and ABH for their further clinical training and accommodation, having stayed at the main campus to prepare for their medical examinations, and passed the examinations which qualified them to stay at the UCH, ABH.
Their hopes and expectations were dashed as they now experience power outage at the UCH, ABH leaving them with the option of returning to the main campus that they had left having passed their medical examinations.
‘’We have not had light for close to three months now. It is really bad. Our lecturers are on strike, too. So many students are now at home’’, according to one of the medical students.
Nonetheless, the electricity situation at the UCH and ABH in the institution was one of the debates at the floor of the Students’ Representatives’ Council (SRC), last Saturday.
Hon. Linus Nice, representing the Obafemi Awolowo Hall constituency in the university, lamented the situation of electricity supply at the ABH and UCH, stating that the situation should be looked into.
She furthered that an injury to the medical students was an injury to all the students of the university, and that whatever the medical students were experiencing could be replicated at the main campus of the institution.
Afterwards, the Students’ Union of the institution issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address electricity problems as contained in a statement signed by the Union’s President, Mr. Aweda Bolaji, and Mr. Japheth Ogundiji, the General Secretary of the Students’ Union.
‘’Failure to act within this stipulated time will leave us with no option but to mobilise and protest against this continuous neglect by the government.
‘’We call for immediate intervention on the matter of disastrous blackout that is currently bedeviling the University College Hospital (UCH),’’ the Union statement read in part.
The union, in its statement, attributed the power situation to the price reform introduced by the Ministry of Power last year, leading to an astronomical increase in the cost of electricity.
However, THE PUNCH newspaper reported last November that the management of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, announced the provision of alternative energy sources to alleviate power outages in the hospital which reached an advanced stage, according to the report.
In 2025, the Students’ Union legislative arm still debated the deplorable state of the power supply at the UCH and ABH.
The UCH was reported to be owing the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) the remaining sum of three hundred and ninety-two million, seventy-five thousand, one hundred, and sixty-one naira, five kobo (N392,075,161.05).
