OBAFEMI Awolowo University (OAU) has, officially, distanced itself from a document circulating online, purported to outline a new student dress code allegedly approved by the University Council.
In a statement released on Friday by the Registrar, K.A. Bakare, the university clarified that while a dress code has, indeed, been approved by the Council, the version currently making the rounds on social media is not the authentic document.

“The attention of the Administration of Obafemi Awolowo University has been drawn to a document on dress code for students, supposedly approved by Council,” the statement read.
“Although Council has approved a dress code for the students of the University, what went viral was not the document approved by Council.”
The university emphasised its commitment to fostering “academic sensibilities, social decency and ethical standards” in alignment with its motto, “For Learning and Culture.”

The Friday circular
Members of the university community and the general public have been urged to disregard the unauthorised version of the dress code.
Further clarifications or the official version of the approved dress code are expected to be released by the University in due course.
Scathing backlash has followed the unsigned circular with the OAU students union bracing for a showdown with the management of the institution.
