There was pandemonium on Wednesday in one of the female hostels of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as a green mamba snake of about 32 inches was sighted.

The snake was found on Wednesday evening creeping under the bed sheets of one of the students identified as Mitchell, who’s a student of Sociology residing in Room 49 of Hall 6 in Town Campus, UNIUYO.
According to Regina, a student of the Department of Communication Arts, who shared the information on her Class WhatsApp group in a voice note, she said that when the snake was first noticed, Mitchell went to the porters (officers in charge of the hostel) to complain, but was rebuffed, saying she was a figment of her imagination.
She said it was not until the snake crawled to one of the bunks in a position to strike that the girl screamed and fled out of the room.
“According to the occupants of the room, the snake was by the head side of one of the bunks of one of the roommates and by chance she noticed the movement on her head side and complained to her roommates, who checked but couldn’t find anything.
“They then went to the porter to complain, but the porter said they were just imagining things; that there was no snake in the hostel.
“After the porter left, they went about their normal businesses, but the same movement occurred again and, this time around, the snake had already raised its head, ready to strike; but luckily for her she saw it, jumped off the bunk and ran out,” she narrated.
Speaking with students residing at Ikpa Road, a short distance from the university campus, Stonix News gathered that though sighting and killing snakes in the hostel is a common occurrence, no student has ever been bitten by a snake.
Though the snake was later killed by two brace girls from the hostel, students of the room where the reptile was found refused to go back to take the night rest as of the time of filing this report.
No official response could be got as the porters on duty at the hostel were not forthcoming.
