Delta NUJ Urges Oborevwori to Deepen Media Engagement, Build Trust

As Governor Sheriff Oborevwori marks two years in office, the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the milestones of his administration but called for more structured and transparent engagement with the media.

In a press statement jointly signed by Comrade Churchill Oyowe (Chairman) and Comrade Victor Sorokwu (Secretary), the NUJ acknowledged progress under the “MORE” Agenda, while also highlighting the need for improved access and communication with the press.

“Commendable Milestones, But Gaps Remain”

Reviewing the administration’s performance, the NUJ noted that “the milestones achieved within this period are well-documented and reflect commendable progress across several critical sectors.”

From infrastructure to welfare, the Council praised Governor Oborevwori for fulfilling key expectations. “From the implementation of the new minimum wage, regular payment of workers’ salaries and pensions, to women and youth empowerment initiatives, roads, drains, bridges, and flyovers – the administration has demonstrated capacity and commitment,” the statement read.

The Union added that “peace-building efforts and the visible infrastructural renewal” were signs that the governor had proved doubters wrong.

“Media Still on the Sidelines”

However, the NUJ expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of media engagement in the state.

“Though modest, the 100% increase in stipends to some journalists across the state signals recognition of the media’s role,” the Council stated. “But this gesture has not assuaged expectations. Journalists still feel sidelined in the current governance architecture.”

The statement stressed the constitutional role of the press: “Section 22 of the 1999 Constitution mandates the Press to hold public officers accountable to the people.”

According to the NUJ, “media engagement under the current administration has been largely selective, inconsistent, and insufficiently structured.”

While Governor Oborevwori has received awards and accolades from media organisations, the Union warned: “Such accolades, though notable, cannot replace institutionalised, statewide media dialogue and open access to the State Chief Executive.”

“Past Administrations Did Better”

The NUJ pointed out that previous administrations in Delta State had better structures for media relations. “Chief James Ibori and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan institutionalised quarterly press briefings and media parley sessions,” it recalled.

“Even Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa made modest efforts, though his administration lacked consistency and broader inclusion.”

One year ago, the NUJ had placed a goodwill advertorial celebrating the governor’s first year in office. “One year after, we cannot see any reciprocation in the form of meaningful engagement with the media,” the Union stated.

“This Is Not An Attack – It’s A Call”

The statement was clear in its intent: “Let it be made clear: this intervention is not driven by animosity or self-interest, but by a genuine desire to see the government succeed in deepening democratic ideals.”

“It is an objective and professional reflection of our constitutional responsibility as the Fourth Estate in Government.”

“Still Time to Get It Right”

Calling on Governor Oborevwori to recalibrate his media strategy, the Union stressed: “The good news is that it is not too late. The Governor has both the time and the opportunity to recalibrate his media engagement strategy.”

The NUJ urged the Governor to adopt a more transparent and inclusive approach, anchored on regular press interactions across all media platforms — radio, TV, live broadcasts, and physical briefings.

“Our mission is not to confront, but to constructively chart a course that advances both governance and journalism in Delta State,” the statement concluded. “We are ready to partner with the government in building a vibrant culture of openness, accountability, and mutual respect.”
