THE Ewi-in-Council has directed a drastic reduction in prices of foodstuffs in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The council, to ensure an effective compliance, also dissolved various associations in markets and warned traders against arbitrarily inflating prices of foodstuffs.
The council took the stance on Monday in Ado-Ekiti during a meeting with the leadership and some members of market women association.
It noted with dismay the reports obtained from members of the public, confirming that most traders usually hide under middle-men to inflate the prices of goods.
Such food items include tomatoes, pepper, vegetables, palm oil, locust beans, meat, yam and garri, among others.

The middlemen were accused of dictating prices to the farmers who bring the food items to the markets for sale.
The Ewi-in-Council, who dissolved various associations responsible for charging exorbitant prices for their goods, therefore directed that vegetables should not be sold more than N50, pepper, N100, and garri, N700.
Further, a kilogram of meat was reduced to N4,000 only.
Speaking during the meeting, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, noted that the step was taken to make life bearable for residents of the town.
He appealed to the leadership of traders in the markets to effect the directive.
Oba Adejugbe said chiefs would continue to monitor the directives in market places to ensure strict implementation and sanction defaulters.
