IGP Creates Two Commands, Upgrades Five In Benue

THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, has approved the establishment of two new Area Commands and the upgrade of five Police Stations to Divisional status in Benue State, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security framework.

The development, announced on Friday, follows a thorough appraisal of the security situation in Benue, particularly in volatile Local Government Areas where greater Police presence and operational reach have become critical.

According to the Force, the new Area Commands are Daudu Area Command—covering Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan Divisions—and Naka Area Command, which will oversee Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo Divisions.

In addition, Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan Police Stations have now been upgraded to full-fledged Divisions.

The Inspector-General said the restructuring is intended to close operational gaps, boost Police visibility, improve response to distress calls, and bring policing services closer to grassroots communities in difficult terrains.

Egbetokun directed the Commissioner of Police in Benue, alongside officers posted to the new and upgraded formations, to display professionalism and a renewed sense of duty in delivering robust security for residents.

He further appealed to the state government and people of Benue to continue supporting the Police, stressing that collaboration is vital to sustaining peace.

The IGP also urged Commissioners of Police in other regions grappling with similar security challenges to devise community-driven strategies tailored to their unique terrains, assuring them of adequate backing and resources from Force Headquarters.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, signed the statement on behalf of the IGP in Abuja on 22nd August 2025.
