A middle-aged Nigerian man, identified as Bidemi, has died after becoming unconscious when he fell into a canal while allegedly being chased by Nigerian police officers.
The incident occurred at the Federal bus stop in the Ipaja-Ayobo area of Lagos State.
Bidemi was immediately rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) following the accident, according to reports from TheNewsGuru.com (TNG).
The victim was the husband of a friend of the woman who shared the story on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
In a video posted online, the man’s unconscious body was seen being pulled from the canal by local residents and members of the Lagos State Fire Service.
According to the woman’s account, police officers allegedly profiled Bidemi as a “Yahoo boy” due to his tattoos.
Fearing for his safety, he ran when the officers cocked their guns and was chased until he fell into the canal.
The woman also claimed that eyewitnesses reported the officers took Bidemi’s money and shoes after he fell, fleeing the scene as onlookers began shouting.
In an update posted today, October 18, the woman announced that Bidemi had died in the early hours of the morning.
She expressed her frustration, writing, “He has given up! Yet to tell the wife as of now. NIGERIAN POLICE! NIGERIAN POLICE!! NIGERIAN POLICE!!!”
