Pure Water Worker, Doing Night Overtime, Electrocuted

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

A sachet water factory worker, simply identified as Elijah was, at the wee hours of Tuesday, electrocuted to death while doing overtime over the night.

The tragedy occurred at Kotokoto, Udu Local Government Area of the Delta State, throwing the sleepy community into mourning.

The deceased was a worker at Concept Table Water at Kotokoto community, where large quantities of bags of water are produced daily for sale.

A friend of the deceased, Godwin, who narrated the incident, said that the deceased and one of his co-workers had worked till 10.00 p.m of Monday to get extra pay.

He said that the other worker later left for home because his residence was nearby, but the deceased stayed back in the factory since his house was reportedly far away.

He said at night, the deceased was working on bags of water that had leakages in order to dispose them properly.

Godwin further stated that while the deceased was working, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) suddenly restored power in the area.

He alleged that there was a leakage in the water-producing machine which electrocuted the deceased on the spot.

Another colleague of the deceased, who pleaded anonymity, also said: “We resumed in the morning at about 6.00; we saw the production room wide open, only to discover Elijah’s body on the floor behind the water producing machine.”

He, however, averred that further stated that it was not the first time the deceased was working late to make extra pay.

A nearby neighbour known as Happiness, who narrated what went amiss, said that she heard someone screaming for help at when BEDC restored power in the area midnight on Tuesday.

But she could not come outside because it was around 12 midnight, saying that it must have been the deceased screaming for help.

When contacted by our correspondent, Delta State Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, said that he had not been briefed on the incident.
