A sombre mood has enveloped Omoluabi Layout, off Orogun in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, following the tragic death of a young man, Jeremiah, popularly known as Jerry.
The 27-year-old reportedly took his own life on Thursday by ingesting the lethal pesticide popularly called Sniper, leaving residents in shock and mourning.
Eyewitnesses said Jerry had been battling drug addiction, particularly to a substance known as Colorado (Colos).
Reports indicate that he had stolen and sold off some metal rods to fund his addiction, an act that was discovered and reported to his father.
This led to a heated confrontation between father and son just a day before his tragic demise.
Early on Thursday, Jerry was heard saying, “I am tired of life!” before consuming the poison.
Neighbours immediately rushed him to Oyo Mesi Hospital, but the facility refused to admit him, citing a slim chance of survival.
A desperate attempt to save his life led to a second trip to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, but sadly, he passed before arrival.
Those who knew Jerry described him as a calm and well-mannered young man who had a special love for children—before his descent into drug addiction.
His untimely death has left his father, siblings, and nieces devastated.
Community members are calling for urgent action to address drug abuse among young people, emphasising the need for proper rehabilitation and mental health support.
Jerry’s tragic story serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of timely intervention.
Neighbours have expressed shock and sorrow, lamenting how drug abuse has claimed yet another young life.
Many are calling for increased awareness and intervention programmes to address the growing menace of substance abuse among youths in the area.
