Delta Government Orders Closure Of Unapproved Nursery, Primary Schools

THE Delta State Government has issued a 21-day ultimatum for all unapproved nursery and primary schools within the state to meet regulatory standards or face closure.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Information, the government emphasised its commitment to sanitising private sector participation in primary education.

The directive mandates all unapproved schools to upgrade their infrastructure and formalise their status with the Ministry of Primary Education immediately.

“The Delta State Government, in pursuance of its responsibility to sanitise the private sector participation in the primary education sector, hereby gives all unapproved primary schools in the state a 21-day ultimatum to comply,” the statement read.

Failure to adhere to this directive, the government warned, would result in severe sanctions, including the outright closure of non-compliant schools.

The decision follows concerns over the proliferation of unapproved private schools with substandard infrastructural facilities, unqualified teachers, and unhealthy learning environments.

These conditions, according to the government, pose significant risks to the quality of education and the well-being of pupils in the state.

“The 21-day ultimatum has become imperative due to the proliferation of unapproved private schools whose poor infrastructural facilities, unqualified teachers, and unhealthy operational environment have become worrisome to the state government,” the statement further explained.

The announcement was signed by Theresa Adiabua Oliko, the Director of Public Communication and Functioning Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information. School proprietors and stakeholders in the education sector are urged to take immediate steps to comply with the directive to avoid sanctions.

The state government reiterated its commitment to ensuring quality education for all children in Delta State and called on parents to support the effort by enrolling their wards in only approved institutions.
