Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting
THE Federal Government has directed electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and approved meter installers to provide and install smart electricity meters for consumers at no cost, warning that any attempt to charge Nigerians for the meters or their installation will attract prosecution.
The directive was issued by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who explained that the meters were procured under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) to strengthen billing efficiency and revenue collection across the power sector.
He stressed that charging consumers for meters supplied through the programme is illegal and will not be tolerated.
According to the minister, the Federal Government plans to import a total of 3.4 million meters under the DISREP initiative, with about one million already delivered.

He noted that full metering of electricity consumers will promote transparency in billing, encourage willingness to pay, improve liquidity within the sector and ultimately enhance service delivery to electricity users nationwide.
