KEHINDE Oluwagbemileke, a 29-year-old Nigerian national fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine, has been captured by the Freedom of Russia Legion — a unit of Russian fighters supporting Ukraine.
According to Ukraine’s “I Want to Live” initiative, he was apprehended in the Zaporizhzhia region.
The organisation, which helps Russian and foreign combatants surrender safely, revealed that Kehinde had been residing in Russia for four years and had previously been arrested on drug-related charges.
Instead of serving time under Article 228 of Russia’s Criminal Code, he allegedly agreed to join Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine in exchange for a reduced prison sentence.
“Kehinde is one of thousands of mercenaries from third countries recruited by Russia’s Defense Ministry to fight in Ukraine,” the project said.
“He fought for five months before being captured.”
