When One Door Closes: A Teacher’s Journey To Career Growth

SOME years back, I was working full-time in a private secondary school. There was this young man who was a part-time teacher in the same school.

He would come in to teach the SSS3 students who were preparing for their Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Sometimes later, the young man started working in the school full time. He was a Mathematics teacher, and he confessed that he made more money as a part-time teacher than full-time; as a part-time teacher, he had quite a number of schools where he taught.

However, when he was employed as a full-time teacher, he became confined to a school. All the other hustle he did was after school closed.

However, a few months after his full-time employment, the examination body released the results of the students he prepared for SSCE. Students’ performance in Mathematics was below the management’s expectations; then, the Math teacher’s salary was reduced.

Meanwhile, there was no prior warning; his salary was slashed without consulting him. He complained to the necessary quarter but then nothing was done about it.

About two months later, the young man got an appointment at another school. This time around, his salary was more than double the salary that was slashed.

Also, the new school was of international standard and a boost to his career growth.
