AN explosion which occurred in the early hours of today Saturday, 21, at a scrap metal factory located in Mariri, along the Kano-Maiduguri Road, reportedly claimed the lives of 5 persons and left 10 others injured.
The Kano State Police confirmed that the injured ones are receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the state.
According to police reports, the explosion happened as a group of workers were unloading metal scrap from a truck that had reportedly arrived from Damaturu, the capital city of Yobe State.
Police officers who promptly responded to the incident evacuated the victims to a nearby hospital.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who arrived at the scene in plain clothes, ordered the immediate closure of the facility by the Command’s Bomb Disposal Unit to prevent any further explosions.
He said:
“I received a call that something serious had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion—possibly a military mortar bomb.
“Fifteen people were injured, and unfortunately, five died.
“The situation is still under investigation, but we understand the vehicle involved may have come from Yobe State.
“Security agencies are currently investigating the incident. The facts will be clearer once the investigation is completed.”
