MEDIA personality Noble Igwe has sparked a fierce online debate after sharing details of a conversation he overheard between three men during breakfast in Enugu State.
Mr Igwe, who is currently visiting the state, said he inadvertently caught snippets of the discussion, during which the men aired strikingly traditional views on marriage, women and social media.
According to the blogger, the first man advised his companions that once they marry, they should delete every social media application from their wives’ phones. He reportedly argued that wives should only be permitted a few contacts to call, and that husbands must know exactly who those individuals are.
A second member of the group agreed, claiming that women in their thirties are actively encouraging other women to abandon their marriages – a trend he suggested is fuelling the rising number of marital breakdowns.
The third man then added a further grievance, asserting that many married women are engaging in affairs with younger men, stating that “small boys are now sleeping with other people’s wives”.
Mr Igwe shared the exchange on his Instagram story with the caption: “As I heard at breakfast this morning in Enugu”. He offered no indication of whether he agreed or disagreed with the views expressed.
The post has since gone viral, generating heated discussion across social media platforms. While some users have endorsed the men’s sentiments, others have pushed back, arguing that successful marriages are founded on trust, communication and mutual respect – rather than on controlling a spouse’s access to social media.
Critics have also pointed out that deleting apps does little to address underlying issues of insecurity, and that a relationship built on surveillance is unlikely to thrive.
The conversation has resonated widely, coming amid ongoing public discourse about marriage dynamics, digital privacy and gender relations in Nigeria.
As of press time, Mr Igwe had not issued further comment on the matter.
