OGUN — Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced plans for a comprehensive power audit across Ogun State in a bid to determine exactly how much electricity the state is consuming and to stamp out inefficiencies plaguing the network.
The revelation came during an unscheduled visit to the 4-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.
Addressing reporters on site, the governor said the audit would allow his administration to track electricity generated from the plant through the entire distribution chain, helping to identify leakages and energy theft.
“This exercise has become necessary,” Mr Abiodun said, pointing to the state’s recently expanded legal authority to generate, transmit and distribute its own power.
Describing reliable electricity as a critical driver of industrialisation, the governor stressed that the 4-megawatt facility – part of the broader Ogun Light-Up Project – would help the state move towards energy self-sufficiency. He added that no community should be left underserved.
Officials have confirmed that both the 34-megawatt plant in Onijanganjangan and the smaller Oke-Mosan facility are designed with expansion in mind. Distribution infrastructure has also been upgraded in recent months.
“What you see here behind me is a gas-fired Independent Power Plant currently generating four megawatts,” Mr Abiodun said. “It doesn’t get cleaner than this.
“This installation aligns with our promise to deliver on our commitments. We do not just make promises; we fulfil them without unnecessary noise.
“You cannot compare this with some power plants that have been sitting idle for over 16 years, running on fuel oil. It is unacceptable that, in the 21st century, such outdated systems were procured.”
The governor also pointed to the newly inaugurated Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which will oversee generation, transmission and distribution. He argued that ongoing investments were already attracting interest from private capital.
“Currently, Ogun State enjoys several comparative and competitive advantages,” he added. “However, our ultimate goal is to position the state as the destination where investors are guaranteed 24-hour power supply at the most affordable rates in Nigeria.”
The power audit is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with preliminary findings likely to shape the next phase of the state’s energy overhaul.
