Mass Terror Trial Begins in Abuja as over 400 Suspects Arraigned

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

ABUJA — In a historic sitting that brought the nation’s capital to a standstill, the Federal Government has begun the mass arraignment of more than 400 suspected terrorists at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The sweeping legal action, which unfolded on Monday, saw multiple judges preside over simultaneous proceedings across several courtrooms in a co-ordinated strike against insurgency. Sources confirm that the extraordinary session has forced the adjournment of ordinary civil matters, as judicial resources are diverted entirely to the national security effort.

Leading the prosecution is the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who is being assisted by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), alongside a phalanx of government lawyers.

The defendants face a litany of grave charges, including terrorism, financing of terrorist activities, and aiding and abetting insurgent groups. In a nod to due process, the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria has stepped in to provide counsel for those unable to instruct a solicitor.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, personally assigned a roster of judges to the special hearings, framing the move as a necessary accelerant for long-pending terrorism cases that have languished in the judicial pipeline.

Meanwhile, security across the Federal High Court complex has been ratcheted to wartime levels. Armed soldiers now guard strategic vantage points, and access roads are subject to heavy monitoring. Military vehicles remain parked ominously around the premises, as authorities leave nothing to chance in preventing a security breach.

The trial continues.
