THE Anambra State Police Command has arrested one of its own officers after a video circulated on social media showing him threatening violence and behaving in a manner described as “unbecoming” of a member of the Nigeria Police Force.

The officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Newton Isokpehi, who serves in the Anambra command, was identified and taken into custody following a rapid internal review of the footage, police authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

In a press statement, the command said disciplinary proceedings had been activated in line with the force’s ethical code. As part of the ongoing investigation, ASP Isokpehi has also been made to undergo a drug test, which officials said would help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure a “thorough and transparent process”.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, PhD, “strongly condemned” the conduct displayed in the video. He reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution and would not tolerate misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any unprofessional behaviour capable of undermining public trust.

The command further assured residents of Anambra – known locally as Ndi Anambra – that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public, and that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions under the law and police regulations.

In a reminder to officers and men of the command, the statement urged them to remain “professional, emotionally balanced, and respectful” whilst carrying out their lawful duties, particularly in an era when police actions are constantly subject to public scrutiny.

The command also thanked members of the public, civil society groups, and social media users who continue to provide credible information to help improve accountability and service delivery. Residents were encouraged to keep reporting incidents or behaviours that could undermine public peace and confidence in security agencies.

The statement was signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, DCP Ngozi Ezeabata, on behalf of the Commissioner.
