The Oshimili South chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has thrown its weight behind Peter Obi as the party’s consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, in a move a senior party figure says signals the NDC is fully prepared for the contest.
The endorsement took place on Friday in Asaba during the party’s primaries for presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly positions across the Delta North Senatorial District.

Thousands of party faithful gathered at Anglican Girls Grammar School, Asaba, where delegates overwhelmingly backed Obi via a voice vote to carry the party’s flag in the upcoming presidential poll.
Speaking to journalists at the event, Delta North senatorial aspirant and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Victor Ochei, expressed satisfaction with the impressive turnout, which he attributed to effective mobilisation by party aspirants and a growing hunger among Nigerians for meaningful change.
Mr Ochei insisted the NDC is poised to compete vigorously against rival parties in 2027, noting that Nigerians are crying out for a government that delivers good governance, improves living standards and restores a sense of hope.
He said the desire for positive change, stronger leadership and people-centred governance would drive the party’s campaign in the run‑up to the polls.
On concerns about electoral malpractice, Mr Ochei struck a defiant tone, stressing that voters are now more determined than ever to protect their ballots and ensure that election outcomes genuinely reflect the will of the people.

“In the past, perhaps, people’s votes did not count, but today people will rather have you kill them than not count their votes. Their votes must count,” he said.
“After voting, we will follow the process through to the INEC office to ensure transparency and credibility in the collation and declaration of results.”
At the time of reporting, results from the 98 wards across the nine local government areas of Delta North were still being collated for transmission to the party’s national headquarters for final announcement.
