THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the legal basis for the dates announced for the 2027 General Election, while acknowledging concerns raised by stakeholders over possible clashes with nationally recognised holidays.

In a press statement issued on 13 February 2026 and signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission stated that the timetable was prepared in strict compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and its own Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

INEC explained that its Regulations and Guidelines, in place since 2019, clearly stipulate that presidential and National Assembly elections must be held on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are to follow two weeks later.

Consequently, the Commission fixed Saturday, 20 February 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, 6 March 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

However, the electoral body noted that it has received representations from stakeholders expressing concerns about the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain national observances, which could potentially affect voter participation.

“Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Commission has taken due notice of concerns expressed by stakeholders regarding the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain nationally recognised holidays and observances,” the statement read.

INEC assured Nigerians that it remains sensitive to all legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of the elections.

The Commission disclosed that it is currently undertaking consultations and may, where necessary, seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the issues raised, provided that any adjustment remains consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

Reaffirming its commitment to credible polls, INEC reiterated its dedication to transparency, inclusivity and the successful conduct of the 2027 General Election, adding that the public would be informed of any further developments.
