According to Agbakoba, the accident occurred at about 6:46 p.m. on Saturday at a location adjacent to the FRSC Ozalla Unit Command on the expressway.

He revealed that the 11 deceased comprised 10 men and one woman.

“A total of 36 persons, comprising 27 men and nine women, were involved in the collision between a commercial Toyota Coaster bus and an articulated Mercedes-Benz trailer this evening on the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway,” he said.

He added that, aside from those who died, seven others — three men and four women — sustained injuries in the crash.

The injured victims have been taken to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, for medical treatment, while the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

Agbakoba stated that FRSC personnel promptly cleared the wreckage and other obstructions caused by the accident, restoring the free flow of traffic along the affected section of the expressway.

Preliminary investigations, he noted, indicate that Route Traffic Violation (RTV) and Loss of Control (LOC) were likely causes of the crash.

The sector commander commended officers and marshals of the FRSC Ozalla Unit Command for their swift response, rescue efforts and evacuation of victims to UNTH.
