IN a decisive move to ensure continuity in governance, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed Dr Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, following the passing of Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Dr Akpe’s appointment was confirmed after a thorough screening during a plenary session in Yenagoa, where lawmakers unanimously endorsed his nomination. The Assembly reviewed his credentials, administrative pedigree, and vision for the state before affirming his suitability for the office.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, announced the confirmation following a voice vote, declaring that Dr Akpe met all constitutional requirements and demonstrated the competence needed to support Governor Douye Diri in advancing the administration’s agenda.
Governor Diri had earlier transmitted Dr Akpe’s name to the Assembly in accordance with constitutional provisions, urging lawmakers to expedite the process to prevent any vacuum in leadership. The swift confirmation underscored a shared commitment to stability and seamless governance.
A Pledge of Loyalty and Service
During his screening, Dr Akpe expressed deep appreciation to the Governor for the confidence placed in him. He pledged unwavering loyalty, dedication, and a collaborative approach in working with both the executive and legislative arms of government.
He assured lawmakers of his resolve to sustain ongoing projects and policies aimed at driving development across Bayelsa State. He is expected to be formally sworn in at a ceremony to be announced by the state government.
A Seasoned Administrator with Deep Roots in Service
Hailing from Sagbama Local Government Area in Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Dr Akpe’s nomination is widely regarded as a strategic move that restores political balance and addresses zoning concerns previously raised by stakeholders in the district.
Before his elevation, he served as Chief of Staff to Governor Diri, a position he assumed in March 2024. His trajectory within the administration has been marked by steady progression: Deputy Chief of Staff (2020–2023), Acting Chief of Staff (2023–February 2024), and Head of Administration.
He also previously represented his constituency as a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, where he served two terms and held the influential position of Leader of the House between 2011 and 2019.
A veteran public administrator with a PhD in administration and planning, Dr Akpe devoted over two decades to service in both the Rivers and Bayelsa state civil services, retiring as an Assistant Director. His public service record also includes stints as Head of Administration in the Office of the Deputy Governor (2006–2007) and Commissioner with the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service Commission (2008–2011).
Beyond Politics
Beyond the corridors of power, Dr Akpe’s profile reflects a blend of intellectual, spiritual, and physical discipline. A fellow of several professional bodies, he holds a 5th-degree black belt and is a certified Kukiwon Coach in Taekwondo. He also serves as Pastor in charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Bayelsa Province 1, and lectures part-time at the Redeemed Christian Bible College, University of Ede, Osun State.
His emergence as Deputy Governor signals not just a constitutional transition, but the elevation of a technocrat whose career has been defined by administrative depth, legislative experience, and a long-standing commitment to public service.
