Senate Passes State Police Bill in Landmark Security Overhaul

THE Nigerian Senate has passed a constitutional amendment bill to establish state police forces, in a historic move that could fundamentally reshape the nation’s security architecture.

The proposed legislation, which cleared its third reading on Wednesday, would empower individual states to create and manage their own police forces alongside the existing federal police structure.

Lawmakers argued that the reform is essential to tackle the country’s deepening security crisis, including rampant banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence that have plagued numerous states in recent years.

Decentralisation Push

Proponents of the bill maintain that decentralising policing will significantly enhance intelligence-gathering capabilities and improve rapid response to local threats. They also contend that community-based law enforcement would be strengthened under the new framework.

Supporters further argue that state police would enable governors to assume greater accountability for security within their jurisdictions, potentially leading to more tailored and effective crime-fighting strategies.

However, the proposal has not been without controversy. Critics have voiced concerns that state governments could potentially abuse the powers to target political opponents or suppress dissent, raising fears about the politicisation of law enforcement.

Next Steps

The bill forms part of a broader package of constitutional amendments currently under consideration by the National Assembly. It will now be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence.

Should the lower chamber approve the legislation, it will then be sent to state assemblies for ratification, in line with constitutional requirements.

The development comes amid mounting pressure on the federal government to address widespread insecurity, with many Nigerians calling for innovative solutions to the challenges confronting the nation.
