STEPHEN Eustaquio’s dramatic stoppage-time winner shattered xenophobic South African hearts in Los Angeles on Sunday, as co-hosts Canada secured a historic 1-0 victory to advance to the World Cup last 16 for the first time in their history.
The Porto midfielder, on loan at Los Angeles FC, produced a clinical finish from just outside the area in the second minute of added time, sparking wild celebrations at the Los Angeles Stadium as Canada’s bench streamed onto the pitch.

The match, which marked the first knockout phase appearance for both nations, appeared destined for extra time before Eustaquio intervened in the most cruel fashion for Bafana Bafana.
Davies Absence Raises Eyebrows
Canada boss Jesse Marsch had spoken before the game about the “X-factor” of Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, who had recovered from a hamstring injury.
However, the star wing-back was conspicuously absent from the starting XI, leaving the Canadian faithful waiting until the 75th minute to see their hero.
The decision did little to hinder Canada’s early dominance, with the co-hosts piling pressure on South Africa’s low block throughout the first half.
In the 22nd minute, Eustaquio’s pinpoint free-kick found Derek Cornelius unmarked on the six-yard line, but the centre-back horribly mistimed his headed effort.
Williams Keeps Bafana in It
South Africa threatened sporadically on the counter, but Canada came agonisingly close in a frantic period before half-time.
Moise Bombito’s header from a corner was cleared off the line, before Tajon Buchanan’s follow-up was brilliantly blocked by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
The South African shot-stopper was in inspired form, denying Canada on multiple occasions.
Khuliso Mudau’s robust challenge on Richie Laryea prompted penalty appeals, but the referee waved them away to the fury of the heavily Canadian crowd.
Late Drama
After the break, South Africa seemed content to exchange deep passes while the clock ticked down, much to the frustration of the home supporters.
Just past the hour mark, substitute Niko Sigur slid a through ball to Tani Oluwaseyi, whose shot was well-saved by Williams.
The ball looped invitingly towards Jonathan David, but defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced a brilliant clearance to preserve parity.
When Davies finally entered the fray, the stadium erupted. The Canadian captain made an immediate impact, finding Jonathan David, who laid the ball off to Promise David – no relation to his strike partner – but his effort drifted wide.
Moments later, Davies again located Jonathan David, whose angled shot was denied by the outstanding Williams.
The Decisive Moment
With penalties looming, Canada finally found their breakthrough. Jacob Shaffelburg raced down the right flank and delivered a cross that was headed clear – but only as far as Eustaquio.
The midfielder chested the ball down and unleashed a first-time strike that arrowed into the bottom-left corner, sending the stadium into delirium.
The victory sets up a last-16 clash for Canada against either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on 4 July, while South Africa’s remarkable World Cup adventure comes to a heartbreaking end.
For the Canadians, this triumph represents the greatest achievement in their footballing history – and for the South Africans, a tournament that captured the imagination of a nation concludes in the cruellest fashion.
Final Score: Canada 1-0 South Africa (Eustaquio 90+2′)
