OSOGBO — Armed gunmen have abducted the vice-chairman of Ifedayo Local Government Area in Osun State, Debo Faroumbi, after storming the town of Ora-Igbomina on Tuesday night.
Witnesses said the attackers fired indiscriminately into the air, sending residents fleeing for cover before snatching four people – including two Fulani women and the council official.
But a swift response by military personnel stationed in the town forced the assailants to abandon three of their captives, fleeing into the forest with Mr Faroumbi, according to security sources.
“The gunmen initially seized four individuals, but military engagement compelled them to release three,” said Abiodun Ojelabi, spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command.
“They ultimately managed to take Debo Faroumbi with them into the bush. The police and other security agencies have launched a manhunt for the suspects in an effort to rescue the victim.”
No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, and authorities have not disclosed whether a ransom demand has been made.
The abduction is the latest in a series of security incidents affecting local government officials in the region. Residents of Ora-Igbomina have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
Police have appealed for calm, saying that all available resources are being deployed to locate Mr Faroumbi and apprehend those responsible.
