THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restored 22 previously suppressed state constituencies across Benue, Delta, Jigawa and Kogi states, following court judgments.
The decision clears the way for the affected constituencies to participate in Nigeria’s 2027 General Election.
The commission announced the development on 10 June 2026 in a statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
According to INEC, the restoration complies with court orders and is in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2026.
To allow political parties to nominate candidates, the electoral body has scheduled party primaries from 16 June to 25 June 2026.
The restored constituencies are as follows:
- Benue State: Nyamatsor, Ukum Afia, Konshisha III (Shangev‑Tiev), Makurdi III (South East) and Gboko III.
- Delta State: Aniocha North II, Ika North East II, Sapele II, Ethiope West II, Warri South West II and Warri North II.
- Jigawa State: Aujara (one constituency).
- Kogi State: Adavi East, Eika, Ajaokuta North, Bassa‑Komu, Dekina Town and District, Ijumu II, Kabba‑Bunu II, Koton Karfe II, Igalaogwa and Ogugu (ten constituencies).
INEC noted that all other timelines and activities in the revised timetable for the 2027 General Election remain unchanged and will apply to the restored constituencies.
The commission has also directed political parties to submit notices of their primaries ahead of the scheduled dates, citing the unique nature of the exercise.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible, inclusive and transparent elections across Nigeria.
