How Mexico Humiliated Xenophobic South Africa In World Cup Opener

MEXICO kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign in style with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa at the Estadio Azteca, though the match descended into disciplinary chaos as both sides finished with 10 men.

Playing before a raucous crowd of 80,824 fans, the co-hosts wasted no time asserting their authority. Julian Quiñones handed Mexico the lead in the ninth minute, pouncing on a loose ball at the edge of the penalty area and firing past South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The hosts continued to press, with Raúl Jiménez going close on several occasions and Quiñones striking the outside of the post. South Africa nearly snatched an equaliser before the break, but Mbekezile Mbokazi’s effort was brilliantly saved by Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel.

Red Cards Change The Contest

Any hope of a South African comeback was dealt a severe blow just four minutes into the second half when Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge.

Mexico made their numerical superiority count in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered a superb lofted cross into the penalty area, where veteran striker Raúl Jiménez rose highest to power a header into the bottom corner – doubling the lead and effectively ending the contest.

The closing stages turned ugly as tensions boiled over. Humiliated South Africa’s Themba Zwane was sent off following a VAR review in the 84th minute, reducing Bafana Bafana to nine men.

Mexico also lost a player deep into stoppage time when defender César Montes received his marching orders for a reckless challenge.

Despite the late drama, Javier Aguirre’s side comfortably saw out the remaining minutes, controlling possession and denying South Africa any route back into the contest.

The victory gives Mexico an ideal start to their World Cup journey on home soil. For Xenophobic South Africa, attention now turns to their next group-stage fixture as they seek to recover from a disappointing opening-night defeat.
