ABUJA — Troops of the Nigerian Army, in conjunction with the Nigerian Air Force, have successfully rescued Mrs Amina Abubakar, the widow of late Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was abducted by bandits alongside her husband several weeks ago.
Mrs Abubakar, whose husband served as former Director of Defence Information, was recovered during a high-stakes operation conducted by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA in Katsina State.
Major General Samaila Uba, Director Defence Information, in a statement obtained by Stonix News on Tuesday, confirmed that the rescue followed intensified search-and-surveillance efforts, during which troops mounted sustained offensive pressure on the criminal elements.
He said forces made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of the captive.
In the statement, the Defence Headquarters disclosed that during the encounter, the bandits shot Mrs Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing the scene, having been overwhelmed by the advancing troops.
The widow was immediately evacuated and is currently receiving treatment at a military hospital, where she is said to be responding well to medical care.
Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, assured the public that the Armed Forces leadership remains fully committed to ensuring her complete recovery and is providing all necessary support to the family during this difficult period.
“We will continue ongoing operations to track down and neutralise the perpetrators,” General Uba stated, “while intensifying efforts to rid affected communities of terrorists, not just in Katsina but across the entire nation.”
The rescue operation marks a significant victory in the military’s ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in the North-West, where banditry and kidnappings have plagued rural communities for years.
Troops are continuing their pursuit of the fleeing criminals, with military sources indicating that further operations are planned to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region.
