Kidnap Kingpin Arrested As Edo State Cracks Down On Criminal Syndicates

BENIN CITY — The Edo State Government has apprehended a suspected mastermind behind a spate of kidnapping incidents plaguing Uromi and its surrounding areas, in a decisive move to combat organised crime across the region.

The suspect, identified as Christian Okoduwa, is currently being held in police custody in Benin City.

In a related action signalling the government’s zero-tolerance policy, authorities have demolished his residence located on Thursday Street, off Amedokhian Road, Uromi, following what officials describe as verified intelligence and rigorous investigations.

Barrister John Izegaegbe, Secretary of the Edo State Security Squad—codenamed ‘Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists’—confirmed that investigators had established a direct link between Okoduwa and a chain of abduction operations.

He alleged that the suspect had been instrumental in coordinating criminal efforts by importing operatives from neighbouring states and communities to execute kidnappings in Uromi.

“Investigations have revealed that he is the mastermind and culprit of some of the most serious kidnapping incidents recorded in Uromi, and the hands of the law have caught up with him,” Mr Izegaegbe stated at the scene.

He added that the demolition of the property was carried out in accordance with government policy, which stipulates that any building used to facilitate criminal activities must be forfeited and razed.

“This demolition is the result of kidnapping activities. Any building used for such nefarious activities must go down. We have a marching order, based on investigation and verified information, that this building should be demolished. This is what the law provides, and that is what we have done,” he explained.

Barrister Izegaegbe further noted that several suspects arrested in recent weeks had named Okoduwa during interrogations, linking him directly to the syndicate’s operations.

“Most persons arrested have mentioned his name, linking their kidnapping activities to him,” he said. “The government is determined to make Edo crime-free. The law is ready to catch up with and prosecute criminal elements in the state.”

The crackdown underscores the state’s commitment to eradicating kidnapping, cultism, and other violent crimes that have threatened the security of local communities.

Investigations into the syndicate are reportedly ongoing, with authorities vowing to bring all accomplices to justice.
