Five Dead As Tanker Brake Fails Near Ibadan Toll Gate

Eleven Killed In Horror Crash On Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway

IBADAN – A tragic multi-vehicle accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed at least five lives, casting a pall over the weekend in Oyo State’s capital.

The collision occurred around 10pm on Friday near Satguru Maharaji Ji Village, just before the Ibadan Toll Gate, and involved a significant number of vehicles including tankers, trucks and smaller cars.

Eight individuals were rescued from the wreckage with varying degrees of injury and transported to hospital for urgent medical attention.

The Oyo State Fire Service Agency confirmed the incident involved six trucks, two Toyota Hilux vans and two cars.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the tragedy unfolded when one of the trucks suffered brake failure, colliding with a stationary truck parked on the roadside.

The impact triggered a devastating chain reaction that ultimately claimed five lives.

Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the cause of the accident.

“Upon arrival, we discovered that the accident involved six trucks (gas tankers and trailer trucks) and two cars, resulting in a fire outbreak,” Mr Akinwande stated.

“Five persons were recovered dead, while eight others were rescued and handed over to the team of the FRSC led by SRC Adegbite from Toll Gate, Ibadan, for further medical attention at the nearest hospital to the scene of the accident.”

Fire crews successfully extinguished the blaze and restored normalcy to the area, whilst security personnel and road safety officials worked to alleviate the severe gridlock caused by the incident.

The Federal Road Safety Corps has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
