A prominent Nigerian businessman, widely known as “Big Joe,” has been brutally shot dead outside his place of work in what local authorities are describing as a targeted hit.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon, June 28, in the industrial hub of Witbank, situated in the Mpumalanga Province.
Reports emerging from the scene indicate that the assailants—believed to be an unidentified group of gunmen—ambushed the victim as he arrived at his business premises.

Witnesses allege that the attackers unleashed a hail of bullets on the businessman, striking him multiple times before making a swift getaway in a waiting vehicle.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but “Big Joe” was pronounced dead on arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
The killing lands amid a tinderbox of rising xenophobic rhetoric gripping parts of the nation.
In recent weeks, certain hardline groups have intensified calls for undocumented foreign nationals to pack their bags and leave, fuelling anxieties among migrant communities who view South Africa as their economic home.
Despite the volatile climate, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has remained tight-lipped.
As of press time, the force has yet to release an official statement confirming the victim’s identity or speculating on a possible motive.

However, a local source confirmed to Stonix News that a case of murder has been opened, with detectives now scouring the area for CCTV footage and witness testimony.
The Nigerian diaspora in South Africa has been left shaken by the brazen attack.
Community leaders have already begun mobilising, demanding that the authorities leave no stone unturned.
“We are calling for a thorough and transparent investigation,” a spokesperson for a local Nigerian union told our correspondent. “This cannot be swept under the rug. Whether this was a business-related vendetta or a hate crime, the family and the community deserve justice.”
The attack serves as a grim reminder of the persistent safety challenges facing foreign business owners in the region, many of whom have previously complained of being targeted by both criminals and, at times, by those resentful of their economic presence.
