LIONEL Messi has spoken of his devastation following Argentina’s extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, admitting that “the pain is immense” and the wound will take “a long time to heal”.
The 39-year-old footballing legend, visibly moved to tears after the final whistle at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, took to Instagram to share his thoughts on what may prove to be his final World Cup appearance.
“Today it’s hard to appreciate what we achieved, but this squad reached two consecutive World Cup finals,” wrote the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who cut a solitary figure wearing his runners-up medal in the accompanying photograph.
The defeat marks Messi’s second World Cup final loss, having also fallen short against Germany in 2014, though he did taste glory in 2022 when Argentina triumphed over France in Qatar.
Despite netting eight goals throughout the tournament, the Inter Miami forward was unable to inspire his side against a well-drilled Spanish outfit that ultimately proved too organised for the defending champions.
Argentina’s path to the final was far from straightforward, with the side forced to come from behind against both Egypt and England in the knockout rounds, while also requiring extra time to overcome Cape Verde and Switzerland.
“With the matches we turned around by giving our all – matches that will remain in our memories forever – and with the support of an entire country, which, together with the hard work and effort of this squad, led us to once again be among the best in the world,” Messi added in his emotional post.
The veteran forward also extended his congratulations to Spain, who secured their victory under the guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente.
According to Argentinian media reports, Messi is not expected to travel back to Buenos Aires with the majority of the squad for what promises to be a subdued homecoming for the defeated finalists.
The result has sparked jubilant celebrations in Madrid, where millions took to the streets to welcome their victorious national team, while in Argentina, fans have been left to mourn what many are calling the end of an era for their beloved captain.
