Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has unveiled new military uniforms made from locally woven Burkinabè fabric, reinforcing his government’s drive to promote local production and national identity.
The uniforms were introduced during the graduation of the 25th class of Active-Duty Officer Cadets at the Georges-Namoano Military Academy, where 218 newly commissioned officers marched wearing attire inspired by the traditional “Cencengu” fabric of the Gulmu region in eastern Burkina Faso.
Since taking power in 2022, Traoré has championed policies aimed at reducing dependence on foreign imports, boosting local industries, and promoting African self-reliance.
His government says the new uniforms celebrate the craftsmanship of Burkinabè weavers while showcasing the country’s cultural heritage.
The move is the latest in Traoré’s broader vision of strengthening national sovereignty, not only through security reforms but also by encouraging the use of locally made products across state institutions.
