Enugu Recruits Over 6,500 Teachers as Smart Green Schools Initiative Gathers Pace

ESUT Hails Governor Mbah as 400 Computers Boost Digital Learning, Research

IN a significant move to bolster its ambitious Smart Green School initiative, the Enugu State Government has approved the recruitment of over 6,500 qualified candidates for various academic, technical and administrative positions across the state’s public primary and secondary schools.

The mass recruitment drive, announced by the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), Prof. Hyginus Okibe Banko, represents a major commitment to providing the human resources required to deliver quality education across the state, with particular focus on the 267 Smart Green Schools that form the centrepiece of Governor Peter Mbah’s educational agenda.

Rigorous Standards Set for Applicants

The government has established comprehensive qualification requirements designed to ensure that only the most capable educators and administrators join the state’s teaching workforce.

Candidates seeking academic positions must possess either a Bachelor’s Degree in Education; a Bachelor’s Degree or HND in a relevant discipline supplemented by a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE); or a Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in specified subject areas. Crucially, registration – or evidence of ongoing registration – with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is mandatory for all applicants.

The statement from ENSUBEB confirmed that vacancies also exist for holders of OND and SSCE or WASSCE qualifications in relevant support positions.

Technology Proficiency and NYSC Compliance Emphasised

In recognition of the digital-first nature of the Smart Green School model, all candidates applying for Degree or HND positions must demonstrate practical proficiency in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools across all cadres. This requirement reflects the administration’s commitment to equipping students with twenty-first-century skills.

Additionally, applicants for Degree or HND positions must possess a valid NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate, ensuring that all professional staff meet national service requirements.

Application Process and Deadline

Interested applicants are required to submit a formal application letter accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae, copies of academic and professional credentials, a birth certificate or sworn declaration of age, and valid contact details.

Hard copy applications should be submitted directly to the Office of the Executive Chairman, ENSUBEB, in Enugu State. For electronic submissions, all documents must be compiled into a single PDF file and sent to the board’s official email address: ensubebofficial@outlook.com.

The deadline for the submission of applications is Friday, 14 August 2026, giving prospective candidates sufficient time to prepare and submit their documentation.

A Strategic Investment in Educational Infrastructure

The recruitment drive underscores Governor Mbah’s understanding that educational infrastructure extends beyond buildings and technology to encompass the human capital essential for delivering quality learning outcomes.

By setting stringent qualification requirements, mandating TRCN registration and insisting on ICT proficiency, the administration is signalling its determination to build a teaching workforce capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

For Enugu State, the success of the Smart Green School initiative – and indeed the broader ambition of providing quality education across all public schools – will depend significantly on the calibre of the educators recruited through this process. With over 6,500 positions to fill, the government has demonstrated that its commitment to educational transformation is matched by tangible investment in the people who will make it possible.

Applications close on 14 August 2026, and prospective candidates are advised to ensure their submissions meet all specified requirements to be considered for this career-defining opportunity in Enugu State’s public education sector.
